A glancing near post Darren Sked header grabbed a point for Eversley in a thrilling 4-4 draw against title contenders Cobham at Fox Lane. What sounds like a rescue act could and should have been a hard earned victory for the Boars who hit the post twice and scored twice in the opening 35 minutes. A kamikaze 6 minute spell either side of half time emphasised the quality of the Cobham front line and a tendency for Eversley to switch off at crucial moments of a game.
Eversley were up for this game from the start and rode an early onslaught from Cobham with keeper Adrian Giles called in to action tip a Ricky Ramsey shot round the post. At the other end Matt Stamp`s header from a Kieron Thorn cross smashed against the post. Stamp`s snap shot from goal mouth also clipped the upright just moments later. On 20 minutes Eversley took the lead, getting increasing joy from wide areas, Craig Smith dashed past the Cobham full back and crossed for Bradley Worboys to steel in at the far post and powerfully head home. Despite creating the more clear cut chances Cobham were causing problems all the time with the pace of their wide players and lightning quick Ramsey up front. On 35 minutes it was 2-0 as Stamp converted from close range after a flick on from Darren Sked. It was now looking comfortable for the home side who enjoyed their best period of possession, keeping the ball and frustrating the young visitors. Ironically though during this period a gift from Eversley`s Stephen Taylor gave Cobham a lifeline just before the break when his back pass fell woefully short, letting in Ramsey who needed no second invitation to make it 2-1 at half time.
This gave the visitors the incentive they needed and came flying out of the blocks. A combination of some very poor decision making by Eversley and some excellent finishing by Cobham`s Elliot Beam saw the score line change to 2-3 by the 50th minute. Beam stayed composed riding two tackles leaving 2 defenders in his wake to slot home right footed from 8 yards. From the kick off the home side inexplicably put themselves under pressure again with a pass back to their own full back. The isolated Mark Morgan lost possession as Cobham piled forward and within 90 seconds Beam had struck again, this time with his left foot from just outside the box.
A shell shocked Eversley regrouped and by the 58th minute it was 3-3. Will Neville’s deep free kick, nodded down by Sked for thorn to poke the ball home from 4 yards. Cobham came roaring back and showed why they are the current form side in the league with 7 straight wins. A fine tip over denied Ramsey his second after a thunderous free kick led to a Cobham corner which was only partially cleared. A penalty spot scramble ensued with the ball falling kindly to Shane Cheeseman who slotted expertly in the corner through a melee of players.
Fresh legs gave Eversley added impetus as they piled forward in search of an equaliser. Woods, Scully and Wiggins came off the bench and soon showed the value of the Boars improving squad. Woods set up the tireless Sked who dragged an eight yard chance wide and was then brought down with time up to win a free kick just outside the box. Up stepped Scully whose whipped in free kick was flicked in to the corner by Sked and earn Eversley a point.
