We woke Sunday to heavy snow, fortunately it wasn’t settling, it always seems to be bad weather when we play Blackwater.
We have more than our fair share of injuries at the moment, saying that I could field the team I had chosen on Saturday afternoon. The dressing rooms at Hawley mean we have to share, not the ideal preparation for a big game. I think Will’s sound system gave the Blackwater team the hump a bit? Matt Griffiths was making his first appearance for Eversley.
We had kicked off and moved the ball around nicely, looking very confident. In the 2nd minute we won a free kick outside the Blackwater area. Ben took the kick, he floated the ball over the top for Skedy to beat the offside trap and turn the ball home. Great start and this gave us an air of confidence.
On 30 minutes somehow the ball found its way through a mix of players to find Skedy on his own, all he had to do was turn it in again, 2-0.
Ben had to come off with a tight thigh, he was replaced by Dean Boultwood.
Some fairly big tackles were going it from both sides and the ref was getting quite a bit of stick, when the half time whistle went I felt we were good for our 2-0 lead.
We knew Blackwater would come at us in the second half, they enjoyed plenty of possession with Chalky having a big say in everything that happened for them.
49 minutes a loose ball outside our box fell to a BV player, who’s shot brought out an excellent save from Chris in goal.
On 54 minutes a dubious penalty claim went in our favour, it was a strong challenge, on the edge of the box from Ian but the referee waved it away, much to the outrage of the BV coaching staff?
On the hour a lovely ball by Hoggie down the centre found Matt free, one on one with the keeper, Matt tried to lob him but the keeper managed to get his hands to it.
Blackwater finally got a goal after 64 minutes, a speculative cross from the left somehow evaded everybody and found the bottom right hand corner, Blackwater’s tails were now up and throwing everything at us.
Hoggie had to come off he was just cramping up every time he ran, he was replaced by Twinkle, who I thought did a good job! We had already brought Nobby on for Twiggy who had hurt his ankle.
The last part of the game was a bit “backs to the wall” not often I say that! We looked good on the break and overall I think we were good for the win. It was nice to see we had quite a bit of support on the day.
Several players were candidates for man of the match, Skedy was a handful for them, with or without the ball? Had his scissor kick gone in it would have pretty spectacular! Giggsy was very solid all game, Joey played most of the game with an bad ankle, everyone played their part but I think Chris gets my vote for making several crucial saves, one in particular, his handling of the ball was excellent, I never felt we had a make shift keeper playing.
Team : Chris. Giggsy, Ian, Will and Twiggy(Nobby) Joey, Hoggie(Twinkle) Matt G and Ben(Deano) Craig and Skedy
Scorer : Skedy (2)
